Turmeric is a very beneficial and commonly used spice in the kitchen, which nowadays is well-known for its medicinal properties within the world. Let us explore the many benefits of turmeric, its side effects as well as two of my favorite recipes for taking in the Turmeric with the following topics.

Turmeric is a golden spice famously known as the “healing herb” in India for thousands of years. The Curcumin compound in turmeric is that star compound among all curcuminoids. This yellow color spice has various antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Turmeric is employed in many home remedies to spice up the immunity of our body. My mother applies turmeric – mustard oil paste over cuts and burns to heal the affected area fast in my childhood.

What are the benefits of Turmeric? Is turmeric good for you and your overall health?

Here are some of the benefits of Turmeric

  1. Curcumin in turmeric is useful in depression, anxiety disorders, and cognitive problems because of its boosting BDNF levels (brain-derived neurotrophic factor). This golden superfood can manage the mood.
  2. Turmeric is an efficient spice in patients with heart problems as it seems to improve vascular endothelial function.
  3. Due to its antioxidant properties, it helps to prevent cancer. Studies show that turmeric is worthwhile for fighting free radicals. It can boost antioxidants enzymes within our body.
  4. Turmeric has the ability to help persons with symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease.
  5. In winter, turmeric is the best readily available herb to fight common cold and flu infections.
  6. Turmeric paste is an efficacious home remedy for Eczema, skin allergies. In India, it is a must to do a ritual (Haldi ceremony ) to apply turmeric paste over the bride and bridegroom’s face for radiant and healthy skin.
  7. Patients with migraines found turmeric is helpful to ease their headaches. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, it can relieve the pressure of blood vessels.
  8. Warm turmeric milk is one of the best home remedies to deal with your sleep deprivation. Nothing else helps you sleep better than a glass of warm turmeric milk, especially in winter.
  9. Turmeric can help us shed extra body fat when combined with mild to moderate exercise.
  10. Turmeric can decrease mensuration pain. A glass of warm milk with half a teaspoon of desi ghee and the same amount of turmeric is my handy treatment to deal with PMS symptoms.
  11. Some studies show that turmeric has positive effects with Hay fever.

There is No doubt that Turmeric is a miraculous medicinal herb with its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. But it has some side effects too. Without discussing the side effects of turmeric, this post will not be doing justice to the readers.

Side effects of turmeric.

  1. Upset stomach – Sometimes, Turmeric can upset the stomach and irritate the stomach lining. People who take excessive turmeric doses can experience acid reflux, burning sensation, nausea, and diarrhea.
  2. Stimulate contractions – As we know, turmeric can ease PMS symptoms as it relaxes the uterus. Because of its blood-thinning effects, turmeric supplements are not suitable for pregnant women
  3. Adulterated Commerical turmeric – The majority of turmeric we find in the market is usually not pure. Try to buy raw turmeric and make your own turmeric powder at home.

Recipes for making Turmeric drinks

Turmeric drinks are straightforward to make and there are a lot of quick recipes to take in Turmeric and its benefits. Here are two of my favorites and also the ones that I drink the most.

Turmeric tea recipe

Turmeric tea is an ayurvedic recipe that is a yum treat for your immune system. How to make Turmeric Tea?

  • Take grated root Turmeric or Turmeric powder as per your availability.
  • Boil 2 cups of water.
  • Lower the heat, now add 1 teaspoon of Turmeric.
  • Add a pinch of freshly grated Black Pepper. Black Pepper has Piperine, which is required for the absorption of Curcumin.
  • Add grated Ginger to the mixture.
  • Now strain all the mixture in clean cups.
  • Now mix Honey or Sugar according to your taste.

That’s it. Enjoy your cup of warm Turmeric Tea.

You can also modify the ingredient as per your choices. Be free and creative.

Turmeric latte recipe

Turmeric Latte is also an easy-to-make ayurvedic recipe. This is a must-have drink in Indian households if someone is not feeling well, recovering from an ailment, or just to boot your immunity. How to make Turmeric Latte?

  • Add a teaspoon of Turmeric to a cup of warm dairy Milk.
  • Add sugar according to your taste.
  • If you want, sprinkle some cinnamon for extra flavour.

Your delicious turmeric milk is ready. This is also one of the most effective methods to induce sleep.

Note – If you are vegan, try to avoid almond or soy milk with turmeric. It can cause stomach burn and diarrhea.
